5 [Allen Ginsberg] Chelsea Theater Center of Brooklyn , Charles R. Rothschild and The Circle in the Square. PLAYFARE PROGRAM FOR "KADDISH". BASED ON A POEM BY ALLEN GINSBERG. APRIL 1972.
Playfare 1972 Paperback Very Good
8pp. Approx. 5.75 x 8.75 in. Program for the April 1972 production at Circle in the Square Theatre. Augmented and adpated from the earlier production at the Chelsea Theatre Center. Clive Barnes wrote in the New York Times on April 2, 1972: "Kaddish" is a really remarkable attempt at theatrical communication and a fiercely moving portrait of his mother by a poet. The title, of course, comes from the Jewish prayer for the dead and the play is based on a poem Mr. Ginsberg wrote soon after his mother died in Bellevue.

Her name was Naomi. She came to New York from Russia as a child refugee and settled on the Lower East Side. She survived to become a wife, mother, Communist and paranoid. She thought the world was poisoning her and slowly her nerves broke and her hold on reality eroded.

It is a tragic story but told here with no sentimentality or false emotion. It provides a most honest, almost clinically observed, picture of a family struggling with the mental illness of a loved one. There is something very pure in Ginsberg's compassionate detachment that I for one find immeasurably moving.

The play was originally produced in Chelsea's attic home in the Brooklyn Academy of Music and the transference of Robert Kalfin's fantastic multimedia staging (which makes brilliant use of film clips and TV cameras) has only been effected with considerable ingenuity. However, almost surprisingly, the play looks as effective in its new Bleecker Street home as it did in Brooklyn.

Two scenes - one a Prologue showing the mother in health, and the second showing a reconciliation between the mother and her long-suffering school-teacher husband, have now been added to the play. This is to the work's advantage, as it is now much better shaped. Interestingly, I understand that the additional material was not written by Allen Ginsberg, who is now in Australia, but by his brother Eugene, who is also one of the principal characters in this autobiographical play.

The acting is as superlative here as before and Marilyn Chris is giving one of the great performances of the season as the mother, Naomi. This is a tough, stark play and her performance is harrowing but also the kind of playing that you will never, ever forget.

Fold crease, center. Faint cover wear.
